Hilton Garden Inn Kennett Square, PA – Destination Charging

When Hilton Worldwide announced plans for an electric vehicle charging program in partnership with Tesla and GE, Tyler Misko, General Manager of Hilton Garden Inn Kennett Square, took notice. Tyler realized that no other hotel in the area had EV charging stations and he wanted to be the first to offer the amenity to guests.

The Hilton Garden Inn, located just off of Route 1 in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, has two Tesla Wall Connectors for charging Model S or Model X cars and a GE charging station with a universal J-1772 connector that can charge any production electric vehicle.

Kennett Square is in the heart of the picturesque Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania and is a destination for tourists visiting Longwood Gardens which is less than one mile from the hotel. The quaint town is known as the Mushroom Capital of the World. Mushroom farms in the area produce over a million pounds of mushrooms a week and an annual Mushroom Festival is held the weekend after Labor Day.

DuCard Vineyard Destination Charging – Etlan, Virginia

pluginsites_ducard_vineyard1

You can’t avoid the enthusiasm for electric car charging at DuCard Vineyards. Drive past the main parking area, cross the bridge over the little stream and pull your EV up to the red barn with the solar roof. A simple monochrome sign announces the “DuCard Vineyard Refueling Station.” Arrows direct visitors to three methods of recharging that the winery dispenses. “TESLA” points to the 80 Amp Wall Connector for Model S and X drivers, “Other Electric” points to the 30 Amp J-1772 unit around the corner and once you’ve plugged in, follow the “People” refueling station arrow to their tasting room with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains on the edge of Shenandoah National Park.

DuCard was named Virginia’s greenest winery when it opened. They were the first in Virginia to have solar, they used reclaimed lumber when constructing the buildings, minimize the use of plastic in their operation and serve only locally produced food in their tasting room.

DuCard is participating in the Tesla Destination Charging program. Guests can recharge their electric vehicle while they enjoy wine tasting, music and other events at the winery. Calendar

On a recent visit, we arrived in three Tesla Model S cars. They were happy to see us and people came out with cameras to document our visit. DuCard is located near Etlan, VA, about 80 miles from Washington, DC. It is a nice scenic drive to get there and the patio next to a stream is a nice place to relax while getting a boost of electrons to return home.

Harrisburg, PA Tesla Supercharger Is Open

pluginsightsTeslaHburgSpCpano

Owners Gathered for an Unofficial Ribbon Cutting

A group of Tesla owners and enthusiasts gathered to socialize and have an unofficial ribbon cutting to inaugurate the new Supercharger in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 22, 2016.

About 16 Tesla cars were there including a Signature Roadster that can’t use the Superchargers. The driver of that car charged up at one of the Tesla destination charging stations at the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum in Hershey. (see: Tesla Expanding Destination Charging in Mid-Atlantic)

The Harrisburg Supercharger quietly went into service on May 9, 2016 and is located beside the UPS Store at 3915 Union Deposit Rd, in the Union Square Shopping Center near where I-81 and I-83 intersect on the northeast side of the city. (link to map)

Bridges the Allentown – Somerset Jump

This Supercharger will make is much easier to cross the state on the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Allentown to Somerset. Before Harrisburg opened, you had to jump a 209 mile gap between Superchargers unless you detoured south via Newark and Hagerstown.

Laurel, Maryland Supercharger Now Under Construction

Another Supercharger is being built in Laurel, Maryland. Stay tuned for updates on the opening of that location.

Ocean City, Maryland Charging Station Update – April, 2016

click map to zoom
click map to zoom

Last summer, there were absolutely no public charging stations in Ocean City, Maryland. The best you could do was try to use a 120v outlet at your hotel or, if you had a Tesla, hit the Supercharger in Salisbury on your way in and ration your miles during your stay.

What a difference a year makes. Now there are 18 charging ports at seven locations in OC plus a DC Fast Charger at the Royal Farms Store in West Ocean City that serves CHAdeMO and SAE Combo equipped cars. Twelve of the charging ports (nine Tesla Wall Connectors and three J-1772 ClipperCreek 30A Level 2) were installed as part of the Tesla Destination Charging program.

The Atlantic House Bed and Breakfast has one Tesla station for guests. The Holiday Inn Oceanfront has four 80A Tesla connectors and two 30A J-1772 stations. Desk Manager, Vlad Paic and Digital Marketing Coordinator, Kevin Lloyd, spearheaded the initiative to bring the Tesla charging program to this Harrison Group property which was the first of these new charging sites to open in November, 2015.

The Town of Ocean City placed two Tesla stations and one ClipperCreek at the Convention Center under the Tesla program. The Town also accepted an offer from Baltimore-based EVI to install two stations each at Northside Park, the library and the OC Recreation Complex.

The Princess Royale Hotel at 9100 Coastal Hwy has two (80A) Tesla Wall Connectors that were added in the summer of 2016.

So, when you plan your summer drive to Ocean City this year, you can take the electric car. Here is some spectacular aerial video of Ocean City recorded by YouTuber “Elevated Element.”

Manassas, Virginia Urban Evolution – Featured Plug In Site

PlugInSites_org_UEM-1

On a trip through Virginia this weekend we stopped at a brand new charging station in Manassas to get a little boost of about an hour or 30 miles of range. Normally we stop at the ChargePoint stations at the IBEW Local 26 Training Center just off an exit of I-66. This time we decided to take Route 28 and stop at a new 40 Amp Tesla High Power Wall Connector (HPWC) at Urban Evolution at an office center next to Osbourn Park High School.

FullSizeRender-2
Urban Evolution is a gym that specializes in parkour, freerunning, aerial acrobatics and adult gymnastics. They also have locations in Alexandria and Baltimore and all three will have Tesla charging stations. We asked before plugging in and the staff was very friendly and welcoming.

Food options are a pretty long walk up to Liberia and Centerville Roads. The new site of the BadWolf Brewing Company production facility and tap room is at 8420 Kao Circle, just a few doors down. BadWolf Brewing hosted the 2013 Manassas National Plug In Day event at their original location (still in operation) on Center St., near downtown.

Thanks Urban Evolution! It’s always great to see businesses supporting destination charging.

McHenry Row Solar Canopy with EV Charging

PlugInSites_org_McHenryRow2

The Maryland Energy Administration has a Parking Lot Solar PV Canopy with Electric Vehicle Charger Grant Program that awarded grants to eleven recipients in 2014. One of those projects is at the parking garage at the McHenry Row shopping complex in Baltimore.

The MEA program will fund of up to $400,000 per project. To be eligible for the grant, plans must include at least 125 kW of solar PV panels mounted to a canopy structure over a parking lot and each location must have at least one Level 2 electric vehicle charging station powered by the solar PV system.

PlugInSites_org_McHenryRow3

This parking garage is adjacent to a Harris Teeter store and already had two GE charging stations on the ground floor near the entrance to the grocery store as well as some SemaConnect stations on the second level.

The solar panels have been installed on the top floor of the garage and a single ChargePoint EV charging station is installed on the ground floor at the NE corner.

A ChargePoint card is needed to release the holster but there is no fee to use the ChargePoint station.

BMW & Volkswagen East Coast Express Station in Beltsville

PlugInSites_org_SheratonB_01

An SAE Combo Fast Charger is open at the Sheraton at 4095 Powder Mill Road in Beltsville, MD.

This 24kW station is part of the East Coast Express Charging Corridor that will stretch from DC to Boston and is being built by BMW, Volkswagen and ChargePoint. The ChargePoint App says, “SAE Combo connector for BMW i3 and VW e-Golf” but the Chevrolet Spark EV, which also uses the SAE Combo connector, can presumably use this. The fee is $3.00/hour plus $0.20/kWh.
