Tesla Superchargers in Newark, DE and Milford, CT Opened Ten Years Ago
The first Tesla Superchargers on the East Coast opened ten years ago on December 21, 2012.
The Milford Travel Plazas on I-95 in Connecticut and the Delaware Welcome Center in Newark were the seventh and eighth Supercharger Stations built by Tesla. These were the first locations outside of California, where the first six Superchargers had opened a few months earlier. These two East Coast Superchargers allowed Model S drivers to travel between Washington, DC and Boston. As of 2022, Tesla reports that there are over 4,500 Supercharger Stations open worldwide.
The Newark Supercharger station originally had four stalls, while the Milford Travel Center had two stalls on both the northbound and southbound sides. All of these stalls operated at 90 kW when they were first installed. In March 2016, the original four Newark stalls were decommissioned and replaced with 12 new stalls in the Welcome Center parking lot. The Milford Superchargers have been upgraded to 150 kW, but are still in their original locations. In April 2017, another Supercharger station with 14 stalls was opened at Milford – Boston Post Road.
In May 2018, Electrify America opened the first locations of their nationwide network of fast chargers for other electric vehicles. As of now, they have over 790 charging stations with more than 3,400 DC fast chargers. Electric truck and SUV maker Rivian is also building a network of charging stations called the “Rivian Adventure Network.”
