The Merriweather District in Columbia Maryland has installed 40 Level 2 EV charging connectors. The new office, entertainment and residential development is located adjacent to the Merriweather Post Pavilion concert venue.
Merriweather District Garage EV Charging
There are 10 dual-port ChargePoint stations along the north wall on floors 2 and 3 of the nine story parking garage. That’s 20 charging ports on two floors for a total capacity for charging up to 40 cars at once. This is one of the largest concentrations of Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations in the state of Maryland.
Howard County Supports EV Charging
In 2018, Howard County Council passed an EV-Ready ordinance to require all new residential construction in the County to accommodate electric vehicles. Multi-unit housing requires one EV charging station for each 25 units. The Juniper apartments advertise 385 units. This development was likely permitted before the ordinance went into effect on January 11, 2019. These charging stations may have been motivated by LEED certification points.
Howard County is second only to Montgomery County for the most electric vehicles registered per capita in Maryland. Howard County does not have any Tesla Superchargers yet. Montgomery County has several Superchargers including North Bethesda and Rockville which recently opened.
The cost to use the Merriweather District EV charging stations is free for the first four hours and then a $2.35 per hour “parking fee” applies. The garage has gated entrances but it’s unclear at this point what the cost for parking will be.
